Tuning keys are used on a variety of plucked, stringed instruments to tune each string. The constructions are very diverse, both in terms of structural shapes and dimensions, so practically all component combinations occur.
A concert guitar usually has a perforated headboard mounted on the right and left with a base plate with three open tuning keys per side. The motherboard often has engravings or lyre-shaped decorations at the end of the head. Positioning shafts are made of metal, their wings are made of plastic, acrylic or wood. Typical gear ratios for a guitar tuning key are 1:15 or 1:16.
Western guitars usually have a solid headrest to which three base plates are attached to the right and left, each with a closed mechanism, a tuning key, and side wings made of metal or plastic. For electric guitars, there are other layouts, such as six tuning keys on the left, such as some Fender models, with a typical gear ratio of 1:12.
For an electric bass guitar, the layout and design of the tuning key is the same as for an electric guitar, but is mostly limited to four strings. The mechanism is designed to be slightly more stable due to the stronger strings, the adjusting shaft is 8 mm in diameter, made of metal, with a gear ratio of 1:12.
